CNN —Hurricane Otis is expected to make landfall Wednesday morning as a Category 5 storm near Acapulco in Mexico, threatening to lash the coastal region with destructive winds, heavy rainfall and potentially “catastrophic storm surge,” forecasters say. Landfall is expected by early Wednesday near or just west of the city, a beach resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, the hurricane center said. The heavy rainfall could lead to flash and urban flooding as well as mudslides in higher terrain areas, the hurricane center warned. If Otis makes landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, it would be the first Category 5 landfall for the East Pacific, according to the NOAA Hurricane Database. The previous strongest landfall was Hurricane Patricia in 2015, which made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane with winds of 150 mph.

MEXICO CITY, April 13 (Reuters) - The airport operating business in Mexico is thriving as traffic surges due to multinational companies bringing overseas operations closer to home and growth at Mexican airlines, according to the head of GAP, which operates 12 airports in the country. Manufacturing hubs such as Guadalajara have seen record traffic growth due to the relocation trend, called nearshoring, CEO Raul Revuelta told Reuters in an interview late Wednesday. "But it's also Mexican airlines, VivaAerobus, Volaris, Aeromexico, expanding their fleets, which allows them to open new routes and move more passengers." The downgrade has prevented Mexican airlines from opening new routes to the United States, limiting expansion plans. MEXICO CITY — Fifteen people are dead and 47 are being treated for their injuries after a bus carrying holiday season tourists flipped on a highway in Mexico’s Pacific coast state of Nayarit, authorities said Saturday. Officials in the nearby state of Guanajuato said all the passengers were from the same city, Leon, in that state. It is not unusual for friends, relatives or neighbors in Mexico to pool their money to rent a bus for beach vacations. Forty five of the injured were being treated at local hospitals, and there was no immediate information on the condition of the wounded. MEXICO CITY, Oct 24 (Reuters) - At least three people died from destruction caused by intense rainfall unleashed by Storm Roslyn, which provoked flooding along Mexico's Pacific coast when it made landfall as a powerful hurricane on Sunday. Local civil protection officials confirmed that two women died as their homes collapsed in the town of Rosamorada in Nayarit. State authorities added that a 74-year-old man died some 25 miles (40 km) away in Santiago Ixcuintla, when a beam fell on his head. National power company CFE said on Monday it had restored power to 71% of around 180,000 users affected across Nayarit, Jalisco and Sinaloa states, along Mexico's hurricane-prone Pacific coast. The storm also sidestepped the major beach resort of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state, though it still generated strong winds and flooding in the area.
